The Secondary Schools Development and 4th grades have completed their respective first rounds with Thames High School finishing on top in both divisions.
In the Development grade it was a close run thing with Thames High and Hauraki Plains equal on points going into the last game - in which they played each other. It was a tense battle with Thames coming out on top with a 29-22 win to take home the Laurie Burns Trophy.
Similarly in the 4th Grade - Thames High were ahead of Coromandel by 3 points going into the last game of the round. Fate would have it that they too played each other in the final game of the round. Coromandel got out to a great start leading 17-0 at halftime. The Thames coaches had a few words to say to their charges at halftime and it's no surprise that they came out firing in the second half clawing their way back to 17-15 down. After a penalty by the Coromandel 1st 5 to take the score to 20 - 15 Thames scored a try close to the posts with a couple of minutes to go to lock it up at 20-20. Unfortunately the conversion was missed and Coromandel went on the attack - Thames then entered the breakdown incorrectly to concede a penalty - which the Coromandel 1st 5 kicked to win the game. Thames High however still managed to take home the Frank Treanor Trophy by virtue of the fact that they secured 2 bonus points from the match. |
