Tairua Lose But Retain Silcock Shield

posted May 15, 2011, 6:16 PM by Thames Valley Rugby Football Union Inc
Hauraki North travelled to Tairua on Saturday and again defeated Tairua on their home patch, but Tairua were still able to retain the Silcock Shield for the second year in a row. Although Hauraki North were always just in front, this game could have gone either way, with both forward packs negating each other it was left to the back lines to make the run of the game, with both fullbacks being one of their teams best players. Waihi were probably not prepared for the onslaught from Paeroa West in the first half where the home team piled on 32 points (5 tries) to Waihi's 1 penalty. Although West were kept scoreless in the second half, the horse had already bolted. Mercury Bay kept Whangamata honest in their 19-34 loss, however they now have a bye before going into the B Championship round. Thames and Cobras had an entertaining game with Thames winning 41-29.
B grade results went as expected, with next weeks game between Hauraki North and Thames to decide the winner of the Elders Trophy, unless they draw which then could see Coromandel leap frog them both.
The championship round draw for the A's will be available on the website tomorrow sometime.
